Newman Summer Sports Camps

+ Camp Descriptions

The skills, drills and attitudes taught at Newman Summer Sports Camps are designed to help young athletes develop the proper techniques and essential fundamentals in an enthusiastic environment. We offer seven different types of sports camps during June and July. Below you will find a description for each camp and details on the coaching staff.

Baseball

BaseballAt baseball camp, players will receive in-depth instruction and extensive drill work in all phases of the game of baseball from Newman Head Baseball Coach Trey Guillot and his staff. Camp participants will be exposed to base-running, pitching, fielding, and hitting drills in small groups with a coach at every station. There will be presentations by former college coaches and players, as well as many games and practice competitions.


Trey Guillot, Newman Head Baseball Coach
Trey Guillot is in his fifth season as head coach at Newman. Under his guidance, the Greenies won back-to-back district championships in 2009-2010. In addition to his coaching duties, he also teaches physical education in the lower school. Coach Guillot has an extensive baseball background having played college ball at Tulane and UNO. He also has over fifteen years experience coaching and running baseball camps at the college, high school, and elementary levels.

Basketball - Boys and Girls Camps

Basketball - Boys and Girls CampsThis camp focuses on the fundamentals of basketball. We teach individual skills through station work incorporating a mix of competitive enthusiasm while meshing individual skill development into team play in both 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 games. Newman Summer Basketball camps are led by Coach Kemper Todd with the assistance of current varsity and JV team members. Each player will take home a Newman logo outdoor basketball.


Kemper Todd, Newman Head Basketball Coach
Coach Todd is in his fourth year as head varsity coach here at Newman. In his 20 years of basketball coaching experience, he has earned numerous distinctions including Coach of the Year and an outstanding win/loss record. Coach Todd is also proud to be a Newman alum.

Football

FootballJoin Newman Head Football Coach Nelson Stewart, his coaching staff, and players for a camp that uses individual instruction, group instruction, and competition to strengthen player’s skills. As a former Newman Greenie football player, Coach Stewart is proud to share his passion and excitement for football with all football camp participants. Players will receive individual instruction with special emphasis on basic skill development, drill work, film review, and team games. Players will also compete in games that require the use of individual skills as well as promoting teamwork and competition. We welcome players at all levels and only require each player come to camp with a positive attitude and a desire to work hard.


Nelson Stewart, Newman Head Football Coach
Former Newman (95) and Tulane University (99) football player, Coach Stewart has been at Newman for 13 years and is in his 6th year as head varsity football coach. This will be his 5th year running the Newman Summer Football Camp. He has also served as a member of the Manning Passing Academy staff the past five years.

Ken Lass, Newman Football Defensive Coordinator
Coach Lass serves as defensive coordinator and has helped direct the New Orleans Saints youth summer camps for many years. Coach Lass is in his 18th year at Newman.


Bradley Farris, Newman Football Special Teams Coordinator
Coach Farris has over 30 years experience as an assistant football coach here at Newman. He serves as the special teams coordinator. Coach Farris has also worked for many years with renowned kicking coach Dick Pearce at his kicking academy.

Gymnastics

GymnasticsThis program is ideal for beginners as well as experienced gymnasts training under USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic Program. Classes will consist of Levels 1-5 instruction on bars, beam, vault and floor exercise. Choreography, conditioning, stretching and acrobatics will also be taught. Rainbow Ribbons are awarded for skills achieved. The camp will be held in the newly renovated gymnastic facility and in the dance room of the Palaestra.


Gretchen Schultz, Newman Head Gymnastics Coach & Audubon Gymnastics Director
Former national champion, Gretchen Schultz is the Newman head gymnastics coach and owner of Audubon Gymnastics. In addition to her extensive experience with gymnastics, Gretchen has practiced physical therapy for 25 years. Her knowledge in the physical therapy field complements her abilities to enhance her students' physical development through gymnastics and fitness. Gretchen represented Team USA in the World Championships, Pan American Games and Olympic Training Center.

Soccer - New!

Soccer - New!Newman Varsity Soccer Coach, Jen Kritch, welcomes players of all skill levels to participate in this exciting new camp. With a focus on skill development, players will receive individual skill instruction mixed with competitive team play. A former NCAA Division I student-athlete, Coach Kritch has a strong understanding of the game and the importance of youth development. Each player should expect to enhance their individual foot skills and gain greater understanding for the game as a whole.


Jen Kritch, Head Girls Varsity Soccer Coach
Jen Kritch enters her second season as the Newman Girls Head Varsity soccer coach. A former Division I student-athlete, Kritch captained her collegiate soccer team at the University of Pittsburgh. As a four-year letter winner, she left the program ranked 4th in scoring leaders in school history and 3rd in all-time career points in school history. Coach Kritch has led a variety of soccer clinics and camps. In addition to coaching the greenies, she currently coaches 10-year-olds at the Youth Development Program. In her first year as Newman Head Coach, she led the Greenies to the state quarter-finals.

Speed and Agility Development

Speed and Agility DevelopmentImprove your athletic ability with Coach Faliveno, the sprint coach for the Newman boys and girls Track & Field Teams. Participants will be exposed to a variety of techniques and exercises geared toward improving speed, agility, jumping ability, core strength, and overall athleticism. All of these are essential for athletes of every sport. The camp will culminate with the Speed & Agility Olympics combining the various exercises from the week and compete in a track meet type format.


Mark Faliveno, Newman Head Girls Track & Field Coach
Coach Faliveno has 10 years experience as a Varsity Head Coach in Track and Field, Baseball, Basketball and Football. He currently serves as Newman’s Head Track and Field Coach and in 2010 guided the team to become the State Runner-up. Named Regional Girls Coach of the Year in 2011, he steered the team to win the District Championship for the fourth year in a row.

Strength and Conditioning - New!

Strength and Conditioning - New!This program is designed for young athletes who are looking for a great off-season workout and be in their best shape for the upcoming school year. The goal is to provide each child with the opportunity to improve his/her health, fitness, athletic performance and overall self image. The training will be aimed at improving the following components of health and physical fitness; Cardiovascular Endurance, Muscular, Strength and Endurance, Flexibility, Speed, Power, Agility, Nutrition and Mental Preparedness. Every child’s workouts will be individualized, monitored and recorded in order to track his/her progress. Regardless of a child’s desired outcome, the values of hard work, self-discipline and dedication will be instilled and reinforced.
